Human body is made up of Panchamahabhuta . Panchamahabhuta are ether, Air, fire, water and Earth.

Balance in this element means health and imbalance means disease.

सर्वे द्रव्यं पांचभौतिकम् अस्मिन् अर्थे| 

                                    -चरक 

 Micro and macro elements of human body are made up of these five elements.

Each mahabhut has its specific features.

Kharatva- roughness

Dravatva- fluidity

Ushnatva - heat 

Chalatva - mobility

Apratighata - non obstruction

Are the specific properties of Prithvi (Earth), aap (water) , tej (fire) , vayu( air) and akash ( sky ) respectively.

Shad- dhatvatmak purusha- Man /human is made up of 6 elements.

According to Ayurveda kha means Akash . The five basic elements akash, vayu , jal, Agni, Prithvi and chetana ( soul) form the human body. Earth and other substance on the earth are made up of 5 elements.

1.  Parthiva elements in human body- The body elements which have properties like heavy, stable with structure and dimension rough hard are parthiva elements 

Eg- Nails , teeth , bones etc 


2. Jal elements in human body-  The body elements which have liquid, slow , unctuous, soft ,slimy are jal elements.

Eg - Rasa ,blood ,fat, kapha, pitta, urine, sweat, gustatory organ.

3. Tejas elements in human body- The body elements which have properties like hot and sharp . 

Eg- pitta , digestive fire, skin texture, luster , eyes.

4. Air elements in human body- The body elements are responsible for expiration, inspirable, closing and opening of eyes, contraction , relaxation, controlling activities and tactile sensations.

5. Akashiya elements in human body- The body elements which contain space, porosity, micro- macro body channels, ears are  the akashiya elements.

The Mahabhuta Akash, vayu, Teja, jal and prithvi have the properties like shabda, sparsha, Rupa, rasa and gandha respectively which have the 5 senses of hearing ,touch ,vision ,taste and smell .

Function of 5 primordial substance

1. Prithvi Mahabhuta have the property which helps for stability, support and composition of the substance. It also create roughness, also controls the movements of body. It also play role in different odor of body.

2. Jala Mahabhuta have fluidity, unctuousness property responsible for softness and union of various substances. It also helps to understand taste.

3. Teja Mahabhuta have hot and penetrating nature which helps for transformation, conversion and digestion. It also helps for visual understanding of a substance depends on its content of tej Mahabhuta.

4. Vayu Mahabhuta have mobility property is responsible for all sort of subtle and gross movement. It also help for tactile sensation.

5. Akash Mahabhuta have space and hollowness property helps in movement and transport of many useful materials in the body through various srotas. It also help for creation of variety of sounds.

Examination of Panchamahabhuta

1. Examination of parthiva elements ( earth)

- The odour of stool, urine ,sweat , kapha, pitta.

- In some disease we find a odour in patients breath or urine.

Eg: Diabetic keto acidosis or lung cancer.

- Nutrition of body by examine height, weight ratio.

- By observing structure and composition of bones , nails,teeth and hair.

One can examine external structure by examination of size and shape of various glands and tumors.

2. Examination of Jala( Water)  Mahabhuta 

- Taste examination. In Ayurveda it is explained about the taste of urine become sweet in prameha which is co- related to diabetes mellitus. Also pitta get disturb it gives rise to explicit sour or bitter taste in the mouth.

- Examination of fluidity such as blood, urine also helps in some diagnosis.

3. Examination of Teja elements.

- For testing appearance by doctor of a patient body.

- Examination of skin , color, complexion and texture of eyes .

-Examination of digestion and metabolic activities.

- Examination of body temperature.

4. Examination of vayaviya elements.

- Done by touch.

- Movement of body parts.

- Cardiac moment.

- Pulse, Blood pressure , ECG.

- Breathing movement.


5 . Examination of Akashiya elements

- Space in lungs ,heart , abdomen.

- To examine if normal cavity in these organs is filled by water , pus or tumours.
